Prairie Seed Mix for Dry-Mesic Soils

This native seed mix is designed to restore dry-mesic prairies in the State of Illinois. A dry-mesic prairie is classified as a natural community dominated by herbaceous vegetation (grasses, sedges, flowers) with less than 25 large canopy trees per acre. Tree canopy cover is generally under 10% and shrub cover is generally less than 25%. The dominant environmental constraints to which the species are subjected are regular ground fire, drought stress, and occassional saturated soil. Dry-mesic prairies are most commonly found on land positioned higher within a water shed (upland) with well to somewhat poorly drained soils and gentle to somewhat steep slopes.

Common Uses:

  • Prairie restorations in areas with dry to moist soils under normal conditions that may become saturated on occassion and have less than 10% tree canopy cover
  • Sunny pond slopes toward the top of the "bounce zone" extending to upland areas
  • Sunny slopes of detention basins toward the top of the "bounce zone" extending to upland areas
  • Sunny swale and ditch slopes that remain dry under normal conditions, with very brief periods of inundation

IMPORTANT NOTE: We will make every effort to fill orders with our own in-house IL ecotype seed, however due to our small size and limited production capabilities, seed from trusted outside vendors may be utilized to fill your seed mix order and we cannot guarantee that it will be of IL ecotype. If you require all species to be of IL ecotype for your project, please visit our Custom Seed Mix page and submit your project requirements. Thank you.
